Escape the Abuse

Something very sad happened today, and I would like to share this story in hopes that it will help someone else in a similar situation.

I was selling my art at the Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco today, and during the end of the day, right after I finished packing up, a nicely dressed girl around my age came up to me asking for money to take the train home.

I asked her how much she needed. She said $21, which is a lot more than I’m used to hearing. Normally people are a few dollars short, so I thought she was trying to scam me. But then I took a closer look at her and realized that she looked very beat up. Her lips were swollen and her nose was bruised. It turns out that she had to run away from her abusive boyfriend’s house this morning and didn’t have time to grab her stuff. She didn’t have any friends or family to rely on so she had been wondering around the city for over 13 hours asking for change so she can take a train to her grandmother’s house 2 hours away.

It’s unbelievably tragic that she had to go through all that. My publisher and I gave her the money she needed and drove her to the train station. On the way, she talked about how her boyfriend had abused her for many days before it finally got so bad that she had to escape.

This reminded me somewhat of my own situation 5 years ago when my psychotic stepmom talked her son into trying to kill me with a kitchen knife. I told the girl about my past, and how I immediately escaped to the safety of my grandparent’s house because waiting would mean potential death.

So to anyone out there who is currently in an abusive situation, be it from your boyfriend, or step parents, or anyone who is threatening your health and happiness: Leave. Don’t wait. We can hope that those abusive people will change, but realistically, it’s very unlikely that they will. Don’t let them guilt trip you into staying with their lies and false promises. At the first sign of abuse, leave and never look back. Don’t wait until it gets so bad that you have to escape in desperation and covered in bruises. Save yourself as soon as you can. You are worth way more than how they’ve been treating you.

Take care!

I know it’s been a long time since the last Fisheye Placebo update ^^; that trip to China really messed up my schedule. Here’s a preview of what I’ve been working on. So far all the pages have been cell colored, and now all that’s left is shading, and text editing. Thanks for being patient! :)

Hey guys! It’s con season again and I’ll be at the Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco’s Japantown this weekend (April 12-13th), and at Sakura Con in Seattle Washington the weekend after (April 18-20th). As usual, I’ll be there with all of my prints, books, buttons, and cards! :)

My table location for the Cherry Blossom Festival is on the lower floor of the Japan Center, right outside the Kinokuniya book store entrance. For Sakura Con, I’ll be in the Artist Alley at table 411. I was actually unable to get a table in time for this con, but a kind artist, mind-crash offered to share his with me :) We both look forward to meeting everyone and making new friends so come by and say hi! :D

A little sketch to get back into the flow of drawing after being in China for 3 weeks.

This is what I looked like the entire time I was there. I had to wear a respirator mask every time I went out or I would begin coughing. On some days when the air quality index goes above 300 into the hazardous zone, my eyes would start hurting from all the pollutants in the air.

I took the selfie while staying in my lil cousin’s room. The air was particularly bad that day and I had to wear the respirator even indoors to stop coughing.

There were so many construction cranes in every direction I looked, but even the newest buildings looked a decade old due to the sheer amount of dust that immediately covered everything within days. On most days you could barely see anything in the distance because of the thick smog.

My uncle explained to me that there are so many cars on the road, the only way to lessen traffic jams was to ban certain cars from driving on specific days depending on the numbers on their license plate. My uncle can’t drive his car on Mondays because 1 is the last number on his license plate.

Due to the use of specific license plate numbers for traffic regulation, there isn’t enough license plates to issue out to new car buyers. Many new car owners can’t drive their car because they can’t get a license plate, and now there’s a black market for auctioning off license plates to the highest bidder.

When looking at the overpopulation situation in China right now, I can’t help but think the controversial one child policy was an unfortunate necessity.

Sign up for beta testing opens now! See you there!

Out of curiosity, when it asks for full name since it’s only allowing letters and an _ is it for a username or birth name. It just seems a bit confusing to me as I’ve only ever seen a _ with the request of a username before. Thanks!

It’s for full birth name (both first and last name). Imputing a single username at this point will generate an error. Signing up right now means you will be the first to be notified of the official beta release. When we do release the beta, you’ll be able to choose an username, and since the site is brand new, you can choose any username you want and it won’t be taken hehe ;)

New Fisheye Placebo chapter is out! :D Read it here!

I made a butterfly ceiling lamp shade for myself over weekend and thought I’d share some brief instructions on how to make one yourself :D

Now before I start, I want to clarify that paper lamp shades are safe from fire if you use 40 watt compact florescent bulbs and leave an inch or more of space between the paper and the bulb. Make sure there are openings at the top of the bulb to allow ventilation. I’ve used that other two origami lamps for many years and never had any fire problems. The paper is barely warm after hours of use. But just to be safe, you should always test out your paper lamp shade and touch the paper closest to the bulb after a few hours of use to see if it’s too hot.

Now to make the butterfly lamp shade, you’ll need an old metal coat hanger, some regular paper, string, glue, and tape.

1. Bend the coat hanger into a circle
2. Cut out butterflies of various sizes on regular paper. (Fold the paper in half and cut out half a butterfly to create symmetrical wings)
3. Tape the largest butterflies to the coat hanger
4. Glue strings to the remaining butterflies
5. After the glue is dry, tie the strings to the coat hanger at various length until you have a flock of butterflies
6. Put coat hanger over existing lamp shade and you’re done! :D

- For the lotus lamp, I just followed this youtube tutorial and modified it a bit to fit the lamp shade. I used bigger paper and less pedals per tier.

- The round origami lamp is just a really big Arabesque Kusudama. Here’s a youtube tutorial for how to make one. Make sure to use much bigger paper than the ones in the tutorial for the lamp shades. There are many variations of kusudamas out there to choose from but be sure to pick one that has openings for ventilation.

Have fun! :)
